A spa is a location where mineral-rich spring water (and sometimes seawater) is used to give medicinal baths. This belief in the curative properties of mineral waters dates back to ancient times and was later revived in 16th century England at towns such as Bath, where a chalybeate (iron-bearing) spring was discovered by William Slingsby, causing people to visit the town for therapeutic bathing.
